In the honour of German Botanist C.J. Trew (1695-1769).

Botanical name:

 

Trewia nudiflora Linn.

Local/Trade Names:

False White Teak, Gutel.

Conservation status:

Commonly found in damp places and ravines.

Digonestic features:

Bark smooth, thin.

Description:

Medium-sized, deciduous tree. Bark smooth, grey. Leaves 15-22 x 10-17 cm, cordate or broad ovate, glabrous, 3-5. Flowers pale-green, in axillary racemes, appearing before the leaves. Fruit a berry, 2.5-3 cm in diameter, globose, depressed and smooth.

Fls.: March-April. Frts.: June-September.

Distribution:

Throughout the moist and hot parts of India.

Where to see it:

Along with Bulbous Garden and Gate No. 2 side.

Uses:

Wood used for tea-chest, packing-cases, and matches; also used for agricultural implements, dugouts, yokes, drums, barrels, planks, slates and picture frames, carved images, and toys. Poultice of roots applied in gout and rheumatism. Fruits edible. Seds yield a fatty oil.
