In honour of Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), professor of botany at Uppsala, celebrated traveler and botanist.

Conservation status:

Commonly cultivated in India.

Digonestic features:

Flowers purple, yellow within.

Description:

Shrub, ca 1.5 m high. Leaves 3.5-6 cm long, ovate or sub-rhomboid, entire or sinuate-lobed. Flowers solitary or in axillary peduncles, purple, yellow within, 3-5 cm long.

Phenology:

Chiefly in cold season.

Distribution:

Native of Tropical West Africa.
