In honour of Andreas Caesalpinius (1519-1603), an Italian botanist.

A prickly climbing; pods prickly.

Description:

Large scandent shrub. Leaves 30-40 cm long, rachis and pinnae with recurved prickles, pinnae 6-8 pairs, 5-15 cm long; leaflets 6-8 pairs per pinna, 1.7-3 x 1-1.5 cm, elliptic-oblong, obtuse. Flowers yellow, in supraxillary and terminal pedunculate, 15-30 cm long racemes. Pods 5-7 x 3-5 cm, globose or ovoid. Seeds 1-2(-3).

Distribution:

 

(Throughout the India), Pantropical.

Where to see it:

Medicinal Plant Garden.

Uses:

Fruits tonic and antipyretic. Seeds yield a fatty oil, used as a cosmetic and for discharges from the ear. Leaves and bark febrifuge, emmenagogue and anthelmintic. Seeds employed for colic.
