Etymology:

Derived from Greek word “bryo”, to grow and “phyllum”, leaf; referring to the rooting or budding in the leaves.

Description:

Perennial, glabrous, succulent herbs, 30-100cm high. Leaves usually simple, sometimes lobed or compound, with 3-leaflets, opposite, fleshy, stalked, ovate or oblong, crenate, obtuse. Flowers pendulous, cylindric, about 5cm long, in large terminal panicles; pedicel 1-1.5cm long. Follicles 4, many seeded, enclosed in persistent papery calyx and corolla.

Distribution:

 

Native of Africa, cultivated in India.

Where to see it:

Nursery, Medicinal plant garden.

Uses:

Leaves supposed to be poisonous; poultice of leaves used to wounds and bruises.
